I discovered that the largest private sector player in the RISC-V market is a company called SiFive. Does anyone know how much money are they making from their RISC-V IP sales and processor sales?

Thats a very interesting rabbit hole regarding SiFive. Its a private company so under no obligation to reveal anything. They just recently raised a series F round of about 175 million dollars which does tell us something. It means they still need money to grow and whatever revenues they currently have doesn’t allow much for further capital expenditure. Whether they have any revenues at all if of-course is a mystery. I am guessing they would not reveal and department of defence (DoD) contracts for example to preserve secracy. I am also guessing that they do have sufficient business from players who are looking to diversify past x86 and ARM for strategic reasons. Yes governments, and especially militaries like to do that.

I don’t know, its kind of strange for a company to keep raising money without any clear wording on revenues. Their official statement regarding this reads “To date, the company has raised over $350 million to fuel its trajectory to the top of the performance processor IP market. SiFive will use the funds to invest in global hiring, the acceleration of new product development, and the software ecosystem. ” and has no wording regarding revenues or profitability.

Well if Nvidia has acquired ARM, SiFive would have gotten a major boost but sadly that hasn’t transpired. It will be tough competition between RISC-V and ARM. Success isn’t really guaranteed.

The Chinese are much more likely to succeed than SiFive, given the low end mass market for small MCU.

In all likelihood, yes the Chinese would flood the market with cheap RISC-V clones but they may not care about compliance from the RISC-V foundation. But if it works, it works right? I think this is good for the overall RISC-V ecosystem.
